Is Your Child Ready for Kindy? A Simple Checklist

20 July 2026 · By Star Achievers Academy

Starting Kindy is a big step. You don't need your child reading fluently — but a few foundational skills make the transition much smoother.

Can they recognise their own name written down?

This helps with finding their bag, books and belongings independently.

Can they hold a pencil and attempt to write some letters?

It doesn't need to be neat — just an established grip and willingness to try.

Can they follow a two-step instruction?

Like "pack away your pencils and come sit on the mat."

Can they manage basic self-care?

Opening their own lunchbox, going to the toilet independently, putting on their own shoes.

Can they separate from you calmly?

Even a wobbly goodbye is fine — the key is being able to settle within a few minutes.

If a few of these still need work, that's completely normal — it's exactly what our School Readiness Program is designed to build, gently and at a child's own pace, before their first day.
